"Autism After 21 is working to solve the next piece of the puzzle, a productive independent life for adults with autism." – Michelle Rubin

Why Michelle's Been Nominated:

"Michelle Rubin didn't plan on being an advocate for those with special needs, but her son Scott's diagnosis quickly made her one. Michelle's quiet determination and inspiration comes from Scott who was diagnosed with autism at age 2. She has since fought for Scott and others to receive optimal care as well as learning opportunities for more than two decades. For many families of an individual with special needs it is difficult to find programs once their children turn 21, even though frequently an individual's needs do not change simply because their age does. Michelle is the creator and founder of 'Autism After 21,' an organization with a mission to provide opportunities and services for autistic adults over the age of 21. Michelle's vision will see 'Autism After 21' open a comprehensive day program in the fall of 2012. Michelle's leadership and strength is reflected in this important milestone that will give autistic adults the most independent lives possible. Michelle is an inspiration to parents, community leaders and others through her comprehensive understanding of the needs of the autistic community and her determination to meet those needs one individual at a time."
